Kenny Smith

Kenny teaches communication studies and sports media and communication in The Ric Edelman College at Rowan University. He also does research with The Center for Sports Communication and Social Impact.

Previously, he worked at The Media School at Indiana University, and the JMC program at Samford University. His former students have won the Pulitzer Prize, Emmy awards, SPJ awards, and the College Media Association's Pinnacle Awards.

As a journalist, he worked around the southeastern United States, appearing on air in most major American broadcast markets. Outlets such as the Associated Press, ESPN, Smithsonian Magazine and more have published his print work, video, and photography. Some of this work won prestigious state and regional awards.

Kenny rides a bicycle at an average speed and runs slowly. He builds things, is an advanced SCUBA diver, and reads a lot.

He is married to Dr. Lauren Smith. They have wonderful adventures.

This site is created in a place shaped by water and agriculture, stewarded by countless generations of people, mindful in particular of the Lenape people, the immigrants who followed, and open to the possibility that there may be cultures that preceded them here.

Previously, the site has originated in places inhabited by the Muscogee, the Shawnee, and the Kickapoo.

It is just and fair and wise to acknowledge, and to more thoroughly try to comprehend, the relations between water, land, and people. Acknowledging the serious, significant, intertwined impacts of these things is essential to our personal growth and, hopefully, one element of this site’s purpose. It is a critical reminder of our histories and our interconnected futures.

It is important, then, to respect and seek out greater knowledge, some of it ancient with these places, and to try to highlight the people and cultures, past and present, on this land and within our community.
