President Ralph Draughon, "a living example of the traditional American success story" was an API graduate, a professor and finally the president was credited with some nice successes and shared his burden of blame on a few issues while in office.

Enrollment declines because of the Korean War, building material shortages and a football controversy are pointedly referenced here. President Draughon, though, is considered sincere and honesty, presiding over an important growth period in the University's history, from 1947 to 1965.

President Ralph Draughon was beloved enough to later have the main library named in his honor. The RBD Library has a seating capacity of 2,500.
